The Hechtyphone

A portrait of the instrumental Hamburg International Music Festival mascot and its inventor.

Admittedly, the instrument on the cover picture of the International Music Festival is pure fantasy, produced on a computer. But there really is an instrument quite similar to this fictitious wind instrument. It comes from the Ruhr area – the hechtyphone made by saxophonist and inventor Florian Walter.

To celebrate the digital Music Festival, the hechtyphone and its inventor travelled up to Hamburg. And Florian explains in the video that it doesn't only look wild – it also serves a musical purpose.

»My idea was to build an instrument that combines the advantages of many different wind instruments«
