Charles Lloyd Sky Quartet

Jazz in the Grand Hall: The Charles Lloyd Sky Quartet featuring Jason Moran, Larry Grenadier, Kweku Sumbry

For his album »The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow«, the legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd has assembled a star line-up with Jason Moran on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass and Kweku Sumbry on drums. The result is a collection of new tracks and reissued Lloyd classics, ranging from soulful ballads to a bebop-like homage to Thelonious Monk. He now presents this diversity with Kweku Sumbry instead of Brian Blade on drums at the Elbphilharmonie.

Born in Memphis in 1938, Lloyd was already performing on stage in the 1950s alongside legends like singer Howlin’ Wolf and guitarist B.B. King. Later, he played with saxophonist Ornette Coleman and singer Bobby McFerrin. His first quartet, which he founded with pianist Keith Jarrett, was a huge success with the LP »Forest Flower«, which became one of the first jazz albums ever to sell more than a million copies.

For more than four decades now, Lloyd has graced the world’s leading stages and continues to pursue a wide range of projects with jazz luminaries such as Bill Frisell, Reuben Rogers, Julian Lage and Gerald Clayton.
