»My aim is to penetrate to the real heart of a piece – to its meaning for us in the here and now« –this is the motto of Patricia Kopatchinskaja, who is known for her unconventional interpretations. She places works in new contexts and combines music with audiovisual performances. And this applies to her new project »Les Adieux« with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra: working together with the experimental ensemble and the set designer Lani Tran Duc, she has created a staged concert with a very individual set and lavish video projections.
Art and climate
»It's the search for meaning that drives me,« the violinist explains – and in »Les Adieux« she looks at urgent present-day questions: How much time do we have left on Earth? When will the planet's natural resources be used up? When will natural disasters, rising sea levels and new illnesses bring us to our knees? In keeping with the motto of this year's Music Festival motto »Nature«, the exceptional artist wants to set an example for climate protection.
To this end, she has compiled the programme for a staged concert from several different works. At the outset we hear Beethoven's »Pastoral« with its birdsong, depicting nature in its original, intact state. Patricia Kopatchinskaja then bids farewell to this intact world with extracts from violin concertos by Robert Schumann and Shostakovich. She is accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, a sparring partner equally flexible and forward-looking, with which she has been working for some time.
»The world has changed. Nature is no longer as idyllic and intact as it was in Beethoven's time.«
