Das Alte Werk
To kick off their series of concerts in the 2019/20 season, Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Ensembles present two very different facets of sacred Baroque music.
Please note: Valer Sabadus has regrettably been forced to cancel his appearance in this concert. Alex Potter has also been forced to cancel his appearance at short notice due to health reasons. Reginald Mobley kindly steps in to sing the alto part.
The young George Frideric Handel shows himself from his fiery and vivid side in the spirited setting of the »Dixit Dominus«. Written by the 22-year-old composer during his sojourn in Italy, the work features virtuoso choral parts and gives impressive evidence of its creator’s outstanding talent.
By way of contrast, Johann Sebastian Bach’s five-part motet »Jesu, meine Freude« shows the Leipzig master at the height of his choral powers, and moves the listener with its profound piety. Likewise from Bach’s pen is the cantata »Gott soll allein mein Herze haben«, for which Thomas Hengelbrock and his ensembles have found an ideal musical partner in the young countertenor Alex Potter.
