Mehldau
The jazz pianist Brad Mehldau in all his artistic facets: as a soloist, in a duo, with big band and an orchestra – he shows himself to be a gifted interpreter, composer and improviser
This festival has been in the offing: the Elbphilharmonie and American artist Brad Mehldau are what they call a »perfect match« in the US. The world-famous pianist was not only the first jazz musician to play here in the Grand Hall just a few days after the opening, he has returned again and again over the years and has become an absolute audience favourite in Hamburg. Even after three decades in the business, Mehldau continues to broaden his musical horizons: he sensitively builds bridges from jazz to classical and pop music, composes standards and art songs, orchestral works and film music, and loves the Beatles as much as he does Johann Sebastian Bach. Mehldau is a master of spontaneous improvisation, but he thinks just as deeply about the architecture of composed music. In his »Reflektor« festival, he shows himself in all his facets: solo, as a duo, with big band and with orchestra, and as the soloist in his own piano concerto.
