Circling Sounds
Elbphilharmonie+ / Festival »Lux aeterna«
The »Lux aeterna« Festival presents sensuous-sounding music from all over the world as a »music festival for the soul«. To put people in the mood, especially for the opening concert with the famous Damascus whirling dervishes, the Hamburg Planetarium and the Elbphilharmonie invite you to an audiovisual experience of a special kind.
This concert takes up the idea of the circular movement of the Syrian dancers and transfers it to the aural level. Works from the Baroque to the present day can be heard, in which constantly recurring movements and circular motifs form an integral part of the music; among these are compositions by French Baroque master Marin Marais, extracts from Christopher Simpson’s elaborately ornamented »Divisions«, and works by Steve Reich and Simeon ten Holt, both of them pioneers of minimal music. The audience sits in the reclining armchairs at the Planetarium and watches live visualisations designed to match the music, projected on to the impressive dome of the building.

The Elbphilharmonie’s supporting programme offers a variety of different angles on the music performed – either to complement the concert itself, or as an experience in its own right. As a rule, the Elbphilharmonie+ events are interdisciplinary in nature: exhibitions, talks to accompany a particular concert or events featuring flamenco dancing or scat singing. They take place in the Elbphilharmonie itself in some cases, as well as in museums, libraries and local culture centres.
