Julia Hülsmann Quartet
Jazz Piano
Delicate strength
While this quartet is named after Julia Hülsmann, the pianist herself is keen to let it be known that everyone contributes in equal measure and writes their own works. This is the case too with »The Next Door«, the latest album released by this outstanding foursome with a sound that is simultaneously delicate and vigorous, minimalist and yet complex.
The award-winning Julia Hülsmann, who resides in Berlin, has been working with the bassist Marc Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich Köbberling for 20 years now. They were joined a few years ago for their debut as a quartet by the tenor saxophonist Uli Kempendorff, who is known to sometimes ground the original, ethereal trio sound with more rugged elements. This doesn’t detract one bit from the natural elegance of this music. It has a respect for traditions like modal jazz and the post-bob of the 1960s, and yet this music is fully in tune with the present with its condensed and reduced style of playing.
