Betrayal, love, envy and madness

The opulent baroque oratorio Saul describes in a colourful and dramatic way the unstoppable rise of David, God’s chosen shepherd boy, to the royal throne of Israel. Handel shows his full dramaturgical skill in this great oratorio: for example, he uses unusual, antique instruments such as glockenspiels, harps and other accessories. But this oratorio is also unique choral music, with which the Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg on the one hand opens its new season, and on the other hand marks a prelude to a new, regular Handel oratorio series in Hamburg.
