»Awakening the ear« – this is how Luigi Nono once described the purpose of his music, Prof. Friedrich Geiger explains. »He achieves this through contrasts more than anything else. His music brings very different entities together, which is why no one can really escape it entirely,« he says. In the »Elbphilharmonie Explains« video, the renowned Munich musicologist shares insights into the Venetian composer’s oeuvre and what exactly makes his music so fascinating.
Luigi Nono was one of the most influential composers of the post-war avant-garde. He expressed his human and political convictions in an intense sound language that turned the listening habits of his time upside down. He would have celebrated his 100th birthday in January 2024 – making this a fitting time to stage a spotlight for him at the Elbphilharmonie.
