Death and the Maiden

2021 festival: The unconventional violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja joins forces with the Camerata Bern to present a dark and imaginative concert film. Available until 15 May 2021.

Film available until 15 May 2021.

Patricia Kopatchinskaja is not a great fan of classical concert traditions: her own stage appearances are often more of a performance. She thinks that musicians too need to be receptive to the issues of our time. Regularly playing the same music in the same way »is like eating schnitzel time after time. Sooner or later, you’re ready to throw up!« Instead, this top musician prefers to base her concert appearances on a carefully planned concept, often collaborating with like-minded ensembles such as Camerata Bern, with whom the Moldavian violinist has a close connection as Artistic Partner. In her latest project, she does her motto full credit and joins forces with the Swiss ensemble, combining Schubert’s string quartet »Death and the Maiden« with music old and new to produce a dark and imaginative concert film.

With a running time of just under an hour the film presents many memorable images where the figure of Death always appears, be it as dance master in the piece written around 1600 by Dresden court organist August Nörmiger or as the Redeemer in music by Carlo Gesualdo, who achieved dubious fame by murdering his cheating wife. Patricia Kopatchinskaja and the members of Camerata Bern have garnered great acclaim for their musical realisation of this programme featuring the widest range of styles, with interpretations at once sensitive and intense. One film reviewer wrote: »Alongside the rich strings sound and Kopatchinskaja’s expressive solos, one cannot help be impressed by the wonderful sense of tranquillity and the almost inaudible pianissimo.«
