Alva Noto's music gets off to a quiet start, then soundscapes gradually emerge that build up into towers of monumental scale. It comes as no surprise that Noto cooperated with Ryūichi Sakamoto to produce the music for Oscar winner »The Revenant« – a slow sequence of tension-laden strings chords, as dismal and cold as a frozen wilderness. The soundtrack placed Noto firmly in the international musical limelight.
Alva Noto is the pseudonym used by artist, composer and musician Carsten Nicolai. Be it in film projects, in albums produced together with Michael Nyman or Blixa Bargeld, in installations for the Guggenheim Museum, the Venice Biennale or the documenta – Carsten Nicolai seeks energy in reduction. Minimalistic, but immensely powerful. And his Xerrox project is likewise an all-embracing audiovisual experience, where he focuses on how replicas develop a life of their own. In a magical metamorphosis, each copy departs even further from its predecessor.
At the Elbphilharmonie he appears together with the stargaze ensemble and André de Ridder, two of today's top names on the boundary between electronica and orchestral music. stargaze have already played with Nils Frahm, Soap&Skin and Owen Pallet, and also performed the tension-charged strings music in the »Revenant« soundtrack.
