The voice of Africa
His voice is not one you forget in a hurry: Youssou N’Dour gained immortality with »7 Seconds«, a duet with Neneh Cherry that became a global hit in 1994. Today, the Senegalese singer is one of Africa’s most influential voices – and not only in musical terms.
He has campaigned on social and political issues, sung against apartheid in South Africa and championed the cultural identity of his continent in a globalised world. In 2012 he was Senegal’s Minister of Culture and Tourism for a year. N’Dour has introduced an international audience to mbalax, popular music from Senegal and Gambia, in which traditional griot songs of praise and powerful yet delicate talking drums meet Afro-Cuban musical styles.
The 62-year-old singer, who is coming to the Elbphilharmonie with his band Le Super Étoile de Dakar, still impresses today with an enormous vocal range, at times quiet and gentle, at other times focused and full of power. N’Dour’s commitment to promoting peaceful dialogue is needed in the world now more than ever.
