Workshop: »The Business of Jazz: Connecting the Dots«
Elbphilharmonie PLUS / Jazz Academy
Insight into the structures of the jazz ecosystem
Musicians – especially freelance musicians, which most jazz artists are – need to pay more attention than ever to the business aspects of their field these days. American jazz insider Jeff Levenson is familiar not only with the sunny side of the jazz street, but also with the many pitfalls, dead ends, hornets’ nests and other dubious sides of the business. He has put together his wealth of experience in an interactive workshop, which he is offering in the supporting programme of this year’s Elbphilharmonie Jazz Academy to both participants and the general public: »Connecting the Dots« is the title of his seminar, which supplies a well-founded overview of and insight into the structures of the jazz ecosystem.
Please note: the event takes place in easy-to-understand English without translation.
What is the situation in terms of support in the sector, both musical and non-musical? What opportunities are there in management and marketing, recording and production, setting up networks and project development? Jeff Levenson concentrates on the role that the musicians themselves play as central protagonists in the larger system, but he also takes a detailed look at the web of connections between all the participants. He doesn’t just serve up all his expert knowledge and experience of the US market: he is also thoroughly familiar with the prevailing structures in Europe, as his expertise is very much in demand here as well.
