Thierry Escaich
Elbphilharmonie Organ
It’s all or nothing when the titular organist at St. Etienne du Mont Church in Paris improvises or composes: musical worlds go into battle against each other. For the first half of his concert on the Elbphilharmonie organ, Thierry Escaich has selected a programme that combines French and German organ music and that is perfect for the Advent period.
Highly mannered Baroque music such as Grigny’s »Hymne verbum superum« meets the late-Romantic passion of Dupré’s »Le monde dans l’attente du Sauveur«; while yearning for salvation in Bach meets devout optimism in Brahms. These contrasts are also reflected in Escaich’s own highly dramatic and stirring works, which he performs between the Bach, Grigny and Brahms pieces.
Finally, he combines Edward Elgar’s brilliant Organ Sonata with an improvisation of his own, in which he is able once again to present all the facets of the Elbphilharmonie organ.
