The Red Death: Passion nach Edgar Allan Poe
SWR Symphonieorchester / Sylvain Cambreling
The Masque of the Red Death
As a terrible plague rages across the country, the aristocracy take refuge in a castle, distracting themselves from the horrors outside with fabulous parties. In the end, however, the revellers discover that the Red Death is there among them. The theme of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story »The Masque of the Red Death« seems uncomfortably relevant at this time. And it is no coincidence that the Donaueschingen Festival has chosen to mark its hundredth anniversary this year by commissioning a musical work based on this story. In October, a brand-new passion based on »The Masque of the Red Death« will be premiered at Europe’s best-known contemporary music festival – it will also be performed at the Elbphilharmonie soon afterwards.
