What started as a nocturnal living-room session now delights audiences at major concert venues: the chamber music collective The Knights – chivalrous figures from New York armed with bows and string instruments – fight for a good cause, for cross-boundary music-making that ignores the conventions and rules of classical concerts.
With Wu Man, the pipa virtuoso who became known through the international Silk Road Ensemble, they have developed a programme that combines Bach with Tan Dun as if it were the most natural thing, and places Haydn and Boccherini on the same page as Steve Reich. They may have further surprises in store for us…
