Fragrant intoxication

Referring to Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, the legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin reverentially said: »This music (…) is not a violin concerto.« He was right: as with his later piano concertos, the composer imported many elements from the larger-scale genre of the symphony. That which overwhelmed many of Beethoven’s contemporaries ultimately brought the work cult status from around the mid-19th century.

Formal unity and an opulent Late Romantic sound make Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony one of his most popular orchestral works. After the failure of his first symphony, the Russian composer, through this work, finally overcame a longstanding reluctance to engage with the genre, and achieved his breakthrough.
