Pablo Ferrández
Rising Stars
26-year-old Spaniard Pablo Ferrández is already one of the leading cellists of his generation. He was awarded the sought-after title »Young Artist of the Year« at the 2016 International Classical Music Awards, and he appears with such major orchestras as the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Only recently, Ferrández played the Brahms Double Concerto together with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, whose foundation sponsors him. At »Rising Stars« he can be heard playing Romantic and modern works, accompanied by young Spanish pianist Luis del Valle.
The first half of the concert features two masterpieces of Romantic cello music: Max Bruch’s »Kol Nidrei«, which the composer based on a Jewish prayer, and Brahms’s spirited Sonata in F major. After the interval the duo moves into the 20th century with Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata, which oscillates between Late Romanticism, impressionism and the modern age, and a work commissioned from Spanish composer Antón García Abril (*1933).
