Rautavaara
Farbiges Glockengeläut
»The bells began to chime and the world was filled with sound and colour«: this was how Einojuhani Rautavaara described his visit to the monastery in Valamo in 1939 that inspired his composition »Vigilia«. »In the course of the composition work, I donned an Orthodox mantle, as it were,« the composer explains.
»Vigilia« is a piece for mixed choir and soloists with which Rautavaara bridged the gap between the past and the present. The soloists stand for individual topics, while the choir represents the Christian community that lends the events a symbolic and universal meaning. For concert performance, Rautavaara transformed the original version, which was coupled with the liturgy, into a kind of endlessly flowing symphonic poem for choir. These sounds contain a clear aura of deep and ineffaceable Orthodox spirituality.
