He was once the youngest concertmaster in the history of the Miami Symphony Orchestra, but now he heads the WDR Sinfonieorchester: Cristian Măcelaru. For his debut with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra he chose the brilliant dissertation work of one of the truly great 20th century composers: Dmitri Shostakovich’s First Symphony, which the then 18-year-old put down on paper with exceptional maturity and a well-developed sense of the musical grotesque.
