NDR Chor / Feldman: Rothko Chapel
»Greatest Hits« Festival
»Rothko Chapel« is the name of an interdenominational chapel in Houston that is home to several large-format paintings by Mark Rothko. Morton Feldman wrote a work especially for the chapel’s inauguration in 1971 that reflects the meditative atmosphere of the setting as much as Rothko’s darkly iridescent expanses of colour; it is the main item on this concert programme with the NDR Chor.
Morton Feldman explored the relationship between music and painting intensely, deriving significant inspiration from representatives of the New York School of Abstract Realism such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko. John Cage’s late work »Four2« is an abstract, spiritual and at the same time witty improvisation on the six letters of the alphabet that make up the name of the state of Oregon. Julian Anderson set to music four popular American chorales from the nineteenth century.
