NDR Chamber Music Concert: Debussy on the 100th Anniversary of His Death
Mozart / Debussy / Janáček
The Nobel Prize laureate for literature Romain Rolland once said of Claude Debussy that he had »one quality that is found in such abundance in almost no other musician, except perhaps for Mozart: a sense of good taste. Debussy has it almost in excess.« On 25 March 2018 we mark the centenary of the French composer’s death – a welcome occasion for the newly formed Nima Quartet to make its debut in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall, playing works of only the finest musical taste.
Composed around the same time as the impressionist showpiece »Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune« (Prelude to the Afternoon of the Faun), Debussy’s String Quartet demonstrates once again the composer’s staggering feel for tone and poetry.
The Czech composer Leoš Janáček must also have had the latter in abundance. His string quartet »Intimate Letters« is a touching friendship book for his beloved. »It is the first of my compositions where the notes are aglow with all the lovely things we experienced together,« acknowledged Janáček.
