Musicbanda Franui / Maschek »Fräulein Else«
Silent film based on Arthur Schnitzler with music live dubbing – Elbphilharmonie Summer
Classic silent film in unorthodox style
Silent film music played live in front of a big screen in the Grand Hall – a great »Elbphilharmonie Summer« tradition. However, in this guest performance from Austria, the musical soundtrack is accompanied by a humorous live narration that is only very loosely based on what happens in the film. The Viennese cabaret duo maschek have taken Paul Czinner’s classic film »Fräulein Else« (1929), which is based on the novella by Arthur Schnitzler, and turned it into a wonderfully amusing, ingeniously absurd piece of voice theatre for two virtuosic narrators, for whom nothing and no-one is holy.
The ten Musicbanda Franui instrumentalists – six wind players, violin, double bass/accordion, harp/zither and hammer dulcimer – accompany the action with imaginative arrangements blending classical, folk and jazz. Maschek – Peter Hörmanseder and Robert Stachel – have long been an Austrian institution, albeit an anarchic and unpredictable one.
Their fame has now spilled over to all the German-speaking countries. The pair are celebrated above all for their post-dubbing of talk shows, political speeches and news programmes in which they often bring unspoken truths to light. Angela Merkel, whom they have particularly enjoyed dubbing and taking aim at over the years, now had to take her turn again for a preview video of the concert in the Elbphilharmonie.
