Münchner Philharmoniker / Camilla Nylund / Philippe Jordan
Schumann / Wagner
Adversaries
Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner were not particularly fond of one another. They met several times in Dresden, but neither of them liked the other man’s work. This prompted Wagner to the disparaging verdict: »I cannot comprehend how anyone could be a Schumann lover«. Wagner would have been at even more of a loss, had he been confronted with the fact that even a renowned Wagner orchestra like the Munich Philharmonic can also give excellent performances of Schumann’s music.
Under the baton of Swiss guest conductor Philippe Jordan, the world-class Bavarian orchestra brings together these two Romantic adversaries under one roof with Schumann’s Third Symphony, first performed in Düsseldorf in 1851, and scenes from Wagner’s »Götterdämmerung«. The part of Brünnhilde is sung by the acclaimed Finnish Wagner siren Camilla Nylund, who, incidentally, is also a fine Schumann interpreter.
