Miklós Rózsa was awarded an Oscar for his soundtrack to the film »Ben Hur«. But only a few people know that the Violin Concerto he wrote in 1953 for Jascha Heifetz also found use in Hollywood as the film music to Billy Wilder’s »The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes«. We owe it to Sir Simon Rattle and the exciting programme he has put together for his second residency concert with the London Symphony Orchestra that this highly expressive work can be heard alongside Sibelius’s Seventh Symphony and Bartók’s Suite from »The Miraculous Mandarin«.
At its 1926 premiere in Cologne, Bartók’s expressionistic pantomime ballet triggered a theatre scandal: Konrad Adenauer, the city mayor at the time, banned all further performances. Nearly a century later, the score’s strong rhythmic accents and gaudy effects still don’t leave anyone cold.
