Leif Ove Andsnes / Klavierabend
Janáček / Vustin / Beethoven / Dvořák
A work with a dramatic history
The music of the great Moravian composer Leoš Janáček has long occupied Leif Ove Andsnes. The Norwegian star pianist celebrated his sensational CD debut with Janáček’s »Piano Sonata 1.X.1905«: a gripping work with a serious background – which almost fell victim to the composer’s harsh self-criticism.
Composed as a reaction to the shooting of a striking worker, Janáček destroyed the handwritten score after its first performance. A copy of the sonata survived however, and ultimately found favour with its creator. While the »Lamento« by the Russian composer Alexander Vustin takes up the dramatic gesture of this work, Beethoven’s late » Piano Sonata in A-flat Major« leads the audience into the spheres of consummate classical genius. With Dvořák’s »Poetische Stimmungsbilder«, Leif Ove Andsnes ends by returning to the musical language of our Czech neighbours. In these 13 narrative miniatures, the composer gives a first taste of the world of sounds he would go on to orchestrate in his later symphonic poems.
