Sound exploration between the abstract and poetic
The harpist Kathrin Pechlof describes the music of her trio, which was formed in 2011, as real-time polyphonic compositions. Together with bassist Robert Landfermann and alto-saxophonist Christian Weidner, she plays a subtle form of chamber-music-influenced jazz for which she recently won the renowned SWR Jazz Prize.
Kathrin Pechlof initially studied the classical harp, then jazz composition and free improvisation. It is between these contrasting poles that the music of the Berlin-based musician, who regards the free interplay of her trio as a kind of research project, moves.
She contrasts the delicate, bubbling sound of the plucked harp with unconventional, wooden and deep metallic sounds. However, she does not use sound-modifying equipment as sometimes applied in the field of contemporary music, which Pechlof has also played. The band’s music is scaled back to the essentials – the instrumentalists scope each other out and open up spaces for each other through their playing. Those spaces are, at times, dark and mysterious, and of a brittle structure. With the Kathrin Pechlof Trio, harmony stands next to eruptive moments, poetic elegance next to abstract form.
