The accordion as a jazz instrument? João Barradas shows that this can work, and in a fascinating way. The Portuguese artist was only eight when he won his first prizes in national competitions, and these were later followed by international awards. Now 27 years old, Barradas has already played with major jazz musicians like saxophonist Greg Osby, trumpeters Philip Harper and Nicholas Payton and the bass player Rufus Reid. »Rising star« João Barradas appears in Hamburg in a quintet formation with music ranging from Bach to Astor Piazzolla.

João Barradas opens his concert with Bach’s famous organ passacaglia; the programme also features »Las cuatro estaciones porteñas« (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires) by Astor Piazzolla, king of the tango nuevo, and a piece written to commission by French composer Yann Robin (*1974).

After these works, Barradas, New York star saxophonist Mark Turner and three no less talented young musicians show their jazz mettle.
