Jason Moran
Elbphilharmonie Summer
Alone with 88 keys
A few superlatives are required when describing this man: Jason Moran is one of the most exciting, experimental, stylistically open and inspiring pianists contemporary jazz has to offer. The Texan-born, New York-based musician has long been a favourite guest in the Laeiszhalle and Elbphilharmonie, not least because he keeps turning up with new and surprising material at a consistently high level. After numerous exciting projects with diverse musical partners, he now comes to the »Elbphilharmonie Summer« with a full-length solo concert.
Moran is acclaimed around the world not only for his unique pianistic virtuosity, but also increasingly as a composer, and that for ballet and dance theatre too. When the grand master of improvisation unleashes his ideas and incredible talent all alone on the piano, you are, in a sense, experiencing him in his element. It is then that Moran playfully lets the main lines of jazz tradition loose on each other – from blues and Harlem stride to swing, bop and free. And because contemporary black culture is just as important to him as its past, he also reflects on hip-hop in his own unmistakable style.
