International Mendelssohn Festival
Mendelssohn Bartholdy / Strauss
Art and comedy
Richard Strauss’s tone poems are among the dramatic and virtuoso pieces in the orchestral repertoire. In a chamber-music festival, his symphonic poem »Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche« with the subtitle »Nach alter Schelmenweise in Rondoform« makes the listener smile. Arranger Franz Hasenohrl gives his »Scherzo for five instruments« the title »Till Eulenspiegel einmal anders!« (Till Eulenspiegel – a different take!). By way of contrast, the second part of the concert presents a work from the composer’s youth, which looks forward to the late Strauss in the final movement.
