Handel: Ariodante
Les Musiciens du Louvre / Marc Minkowski
In Handel’s magic opera »Ariodante« the young nobleman of the same name loves Ginevra, daughter of the Scottish king, and she loves him back. But Duke Polinesso, whom Ginevra has previously spurned, makes Ariodante believe that his beloved is cheating on him. Ariodante throws himself off a cliff, and the plan is to execute Ginevra as an adulteress if a champion doesn’t appear to defend her honour. A plot full of ins and outs and extreme emotions that Marc Minkowski and his period instrument ensemble Les Musiciens du Louvre bring to the Elbphilharmonie stage.
The illustrious vocal line-up is led by the enchanting Marianne Crebassa, who made her debut at the Salzburg Festival under Minkowski, likewise performing Handel, in 2012, and who now returns to the Elbphilharmonie. Naturally enough, the story has a happy end: Ariodante gets his Ginevra and Polinesso is killed in the duel.
But on the way to the happy end, Handel shows himself to be a master of the art of contrast, presenting the audience in virtuoso style with every variation on the themes of power and love. Now, Hamburg concertgoers also have the opportunity to enjoy his marvellous musical ideas.
