Variation upon variation
»Variations on a theme« – A familiar formula applied to countless works throughout music history. It is little wonder, considering how the variation as technique and form has always offered composers the ideal mix of inventive freedom and structuralist rigour: a fixed underlying theme that could be adapted in imaginative ways, without ever breaking away completely from the common thread. This was always a welcome challenge. The Hamburger Camerata now presents four variations of such variations in its final »Annäherung« (Convergence).
