Hamburg Oratorio Choir / Symphoniker Hamburg
Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Paulus
With the oratorio »Paulus« (St. Paul), the Hamburg Oratorio Choir presents one of Mendelssohn’s great choral works, in which the composer depicts the life and works of the apostle, and his transformation from Saul to Paul. Mendelssohn based the score on the model of the Bach passions.
The oratorio was originally commissioned by the Frankfurt Cäcilien-Verein, and was first performed in May 1836 at the Lower Rhenish Music Festival in Düsseldorf, conducted by the composer himself. The successful premiere was followed by numerous performances in Europe and the United States, and more than 200 years after it was written, »St. Paul« continues to appeal to choirs and audiences alike.
The Hamburg Oratorio Choir consists of three choirs with about 160 active male and female singers. Every year the three choirs jointly sing a major concert at the Laeiszhalle Hamburg as the Hamburg Oratorio Choir.
