For years, the Hagen Quartett has occupied a place with the world’s elite. This year, it is celebrating its 35th anniversary. As the musicians have matured, their playing has become more personal and liberated, and the four players seem to care less and less about conventions – thus becoming more daring in their interpretations.

With its extraordinary Mozart cycle two years ago, the Hagen Quartett thrilled Hamburg audiences. This season it will present two compositions by Beethoven and Brahms: works that were first attempts for both composers in the field of string quartet writing.

The experimental character of Bartok’s Third String Quartet utilises uncompromising harmonies, blowing apart every convention of the string quartet tradition. This work demands the highest precision – the perfect challenge for a world-class ensemble.
