Gewandhausorchester Leipzig / Leonidas Kavakos / Andris Nelsons
Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto & Symphony No. 5
Quiet star, passionate sound
»I have always tried to take the violin not as a destination, but as a starting point from which I look at the world. Our world, in all its many facets and differences.« – This is how Leonidas Kavakos describes his musical motto and probably the secret of his success as well. The Greek violinist has been a quiet star of the classical music scene for over 30 years now. As a brilliant chamber musician and a virtuoso free of airs and graces, he is a much-loved partner of the world’s best orchestras.
Among these is definitely the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which has put together a Tchaikovsky programme for this concert, conducted by its music director Andris Nelsons. The Russian composer’s Fifth Symphony and his Violin Concerto were both written during a critical phase in his life, and they share passionate, sweeping melodies and the sonorous power of Fate.
