The members of the Ensemble Sarband present the interconnected genres of Arab, Jewish and Christian music. Their new programme celebrates the song tradition of al-Andalus, the part of the Iberian Peninsula that spent nearly 800 years under Moslem rule and was once a creative interface between the world religions. The beguiling voice of Lebanese singer Fadia El-Hage blends the cultural and religious realms.

»Der Mond von al-Andalus« (The Moon of al-Andalus) tells the changeable story of Moorish, Sephardic and Christian music over a period of some 15 centuries: a musical journey from the oldest surviving Islamic chants to the Muwashahat influenced by Sufi poetry, from surahs of the Koran to the erotic romances of the Sephardi Jews. An enthralling song cycle, combining pre-Islamic cosmogony, Christian hymns, the golden age of Andalusia’s advanced civilisation and their musical after-effects up to the present day.
