Musical treasures

Franz Schubert loved to explore unfamiliar terrain: a new instrument – half cello, half guitar – came onto the market during his lifetime, inspiring the composition of the work now known as the »Arpeggione Sonata«. The cello is an excellent replacement for the arpeggione in this sonata, and the great cellist Gaspar Cassadó arranged the piano part for orchestra. Franz Schubert would have been delighted to see another masterpiece added to the cello concerto canon in this way. The Russian cellist Anastasia Kobekina, who is often praised for the »captivating elegance« (Der Tagesspiegel) of her performances, invites you to discover this special version of the work at SHMF. Besides Robert Schumann’s Fourth Symphony, the concert will also feature another musical treasure: a piece by the Mecklenburg composer Emilie Mayer, who was well known across Europe in her time but who, unjustly, is little known today.
