The Shakespeare of music
Under their chief conductor Paavo Järvi, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is known for its award-winning performances of the most important symphonies in the repertoire. The orchestra has set new standards with its outstanding complete recordings of Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. But this successful team pulls off a similar featuring with Joseph Haydn, the first important composer of symphonies in music history. Järvi and the DKB simply have Haydn’s sophisticated »London Symphonies«, with their many little jokes and rustic interludes, in their blood.
With the popular »Drum Roll« Symphony, the Kammerphilharmonie Bremen carries us off to the English capital, where Haydn was idolised as »the Shakespeare of music«. He wrote his »London Symphonies« for the concert impresario Johann Peter Salomon, a native of Bonn, who invited the composer to give concerts in England for the first time in 1791. But before Haydn departed for his first triumphant visit to Britain, he bade farewell to Mozart in Vienna, who pointed out that Haydn would encounter communication problems in London. Haydn’s calm response to the well-meant advice was: »My language is understood by the whole world«.
