Chor St. Michaelis
Mendelssohn Bartholdy / Handel / Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Druids, witches and »heathen folk« are the protagonists in Goethe’s ballad »Die erste Walpurgisnacht«. People are ridiculed here as »pious parsons« – not really an ideal topic for a place like St Michael’s Church. With his setting of »Die erste Walpurgisnacht«, Op. 60, for soloists, chorus and orchestra, Felix Mendelssohn wrote one of his most brilliant and dramatic compositions. Mendelssohn fan Christoph Schoener has had this work on his agenda for many years, and now he has found the right place to perform it: the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall.
