The best of two worlds

Caterina Lichtenberg and Mike Marshall are a committed duo both in music and in life. Lichtenberg comes from Germany; she enjoys a formidable reputation as a classical mandolin player and she holds the world’s only Professorship for the instrument (at the Music Conservatory in Cologne). Marshall grew up in Florida and his artistic background is in the American way of playing the mandolin, in bluegrass. Like Chris Thile, with whom he also makes an outstanding duo, Mike Marhsall is one of America’s top mandolin players.

Lichtenberg and Marshall now showcase their talents, skills and loves in a jointly developed repertoire that does justice to both worlds – the classical and Baroque as well as folk. Bluegrass helped Lichtenberg approach Baroque in new ways, she admits – after all, improvisation was very common in the Baroque age. Conversely, Marshall enjoys the additional possibilities that are opened up when working with notated material from music history.

The duo exudes power and sensitivity in equal measure. Marshall expands the duo’s sound spectrum through the occasional use of a mandocello, which has the same pitch as the violoncello, i.e. significantly deeper than the mandolin, giving some works added warmth and groove.
