The Quatuor Mona, led by its first violin Verena Chen from Hamburg, was founded at the Conservatoire de Paris in 2018. Thanks to its energy and commitment, the quartet was granted immediate admission to the master programme, and established itself on the concert circuit. The ensemble receives a grant from the Villa Musica Foundation, and gets its polish from Günther Pichler, the first violin of the legendary Alban Berg Quartet for over 35 years.
The recital opens with Schubert’s »unfinished chamber music«, the Quartettsatz in C minor. With this gripping early work, the composer was feeling his way towards a new style, but (regrettably) he only wrote this single movement. Anton Webern’s rapturous »Langsamer Satz« for string quartet likewise shows its composer exploring the traditional genre for the first time and taking a step in the direction of his own, very individual style. The evening comes to an end with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet op. 13. Inspired by the late Beethoven quartets, Mendelssohn wrote a work as magical as it is innovative, an early stroke of genius from a composer only 18 at the time.
