CANCELLED: Symphoniker Hamburg / Sylvain Cambreling

Chief conductor Sylvain Cambreling was already a celebrated opera conductor during his time in Frankfurt and Stuttgart, and for this concert he assembles a cast of excellent singers right down to the supporting roles to perform Wagner’s ground-breaking opera »Tristan und Isolde«. First played in 1865, the work is known for its »endless melody«. There is no beginning and no end to the music here, it simply goes on forever. Tristan and Isolde yearn for one another, they torment each other, they love each other without finding fulfilment – and all that is reflected in the music. The concert opens with music by the Austrian composer Alexander von Zemlinsky. His »Sechs Gesänge« of 1913 are in the best Gustav Mahler tradition. They are based on texts by Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck, whose distinctive melancholy tone leads perfectly into the world of Wagnerian opera.
