Two Russian composers, two highly individual works: Prokofiev may have been known as an »enfant terrible«, but he did seek and find a balance between his creative impulses and the requirements of »Socialist Realism« – even if he didn’t always follow them to the letter. He completed his ground-breaking »Sinfonia concertante« in 1952 and dedicated it to the world-famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich – who was closely involved in the composition of the work. It is an ambiguous piece that only pays lip service to a genre largely forgotten since Mozart’s time – and it captivates with rapturous episodes, rhythmic succinctness and folk elements.
