Among the German radio orchestras, the SWR Symphony Orchestra possibly enjoys the best reputation in the field of contemporary music. Thus it comes as no surprise that the ensemble is at the top of the guest list for the new festival »Elbphilharmonie Visions«. And the programme of tonight’s concert is very close to the here and now with two brand-new works by French composer Franck Bedrossian and the German-Turkish Zeynep Gedizlioğlu.

Do you know »Saturation«? We are not referring to feeling that you’ve eaten too much, but to a specialist musical term coined by composer Franck Bedrossian in the last few years. But the basic idea is the same: a table in the orchestra laden with food and drink, as it were. »Saturationists« love lots of excessive sounds and outbursts of energy. So the pianist needs to bring a healthy appetite with him for Bedrossian’s new piano concerto.

Steve Reich’s music calls for the exact opposite: Minimal Music propagates not abundance, but the utmost reduction, and Reich’s 1970 composition »Drumming« is a prime example of this style. The concert is brought to a close by Spanish newcomer conductor Pablo Rus Broseta with a new piece by the award-winning Rihm pupil Zeynep Gedizlioğlu.
