As one of the great virtuosi on the kora and as a masterly drummer, Seckou Keita transports the legacy of the West African griots to the present day. The musician from the Casamance region of southern Senegal has expanded the boundaries of playing on the kora, a harp-lute with 21 strings, and has evolved a musical style that flows freely between traditions ranging from Guinea to Mali, also taking in European jazz and folk music.
Seckou taught himself to play the original 22-string form of the kora, embedded in the 700-year-old art of the Kingdom of Gabou and of the griot clans Cissokho and Keita. His skill soon took him out into the world: collaborations with Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and with the Cuban jazz musician Omar Sosa are among his career milestones. But the heart of Keita’s work is still solo playing of a type once performed for rulers – this, and its careful metamorphosis into a modern art form.
