How does a piano music and lieder genius approach the challenges of symphonic music? »I have done very little new in terms of lieder«, wrote the 27-year-old Franz Schubert to a friend in 1824. »Instead I have tried my hand at a number of instrumental things. I have composed 2 quartets for violins, viola and cello, and an octet, and I also intend to write another quartet. In this way I am paving the way towards a great symphony.« Schubert’s wonderful octet is the highlight of this Philharmonic Chamber Concert with five string and three wind players. The programme also features works by Nielsen and Dvořák.
