»The idea of uniting the sound of a clarinet with a string instrument and a piano has appealed to many composers past and present thanks to its wide variation of timbre. This morning’s concert opens with a classic of the genre, Beethoven’s ›Gassenhauer Trio‹. The work owes its whimsical nickname (a Gassenhauer is a popular melody) to the third movement, where Beethoven arranges a popular tune of the time from Joseph Weigl’s opera ›L’amor marinaro‹ as an elaborate set of variations. After the Beethoven, we present two more classic works from the chamber music repertoire: Brahms’s Clarinet Trio and Bartók’s Trio for Violin, Clarinet and Piano.«
