The Philharmonia Orchestra from London can be relied on to provide magic moments at the Elbphilharmonie, and all the moreso when charismatic conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen is on the rostrum. Now the dream team returns to Hamburg once more.
Tonight’s programme features a concert version of Beethoven’s ballet »The Creatures of Prometheus«, which is seldom performed in its entirety. In the Greek myths, the demigod Prometheus steals fire from the gods and gives it to humanity, thus turning them into creatures with a soul. Thus he represented the perfect role model for keen fans of the Enlightenment like Beethoven. The composer’s admiration for Prometheus is reflected in the spirited ballet score, which he also adapted in the finale of his great »Eroica« Symphony.
