When Johannes Brahms wanted to give the first performance of his Piano Concerto No.1 in Hamburg in 1858, unexpected problems cropped up: »They refuse to let me have the only serviceable piano«, the composer complained. »Happy as I am on the one hand that I need not play my concerto, especially not to our most unresponsive audience, I am annoyed about the reason, which is so typical of Hamburg.« Over 150 years later it goes without saying that, as his own 75th birthday approaches, master pianist Rudolf Buchbinder is allowed to choose the best instrument. On the conductor’s rostrum: former chief conductor Christoph Eschenbach, a keen admirer of the music of Robert Schumann, whose Second Symphony brings the concert to an end.
