An accent like the thrust of a knife, right at the opening of the minuet, which is in no way cheerful or vibrant. And then the slow movement, played with mutes, where the viola murmurs of imminent doom. Mozart rarely composed music as full of pain as his Quintet in G minor, which contributes to its standing as one of the greatest masterpieces in the chamber music repertoire. The ensemble, which supplements the string quartet with a second viola, is one that appealed to Felix Mendelssohn as well. His String Quintet is set in the brighter key of A major, it’s true; but in the slow movement – a lament for a deceased friend – it likewise conjures up a dark and moving mood.
